A few weeks ago a buddy of mine asked if I knew any good weed dealers in the city. A friend of his was moving to New York to take a job at Fox News, and not one of the news shows but one of the toxic talk shows run by the likes of Hannity or O’Reilly. This presented me with a dilemma. I’m usually sympathetic to all pleasure-seekers and hypocrisy doesn’t bother me that much; we all got to make our deals to live in this world. But I’ve reached my limit with the Trump Channel.

Then I remembered something Larry Flynt once told me about political corruption: “You’d think it was money for the Republicans and sex for the Democrats, but actually it’s the other way around.” There’s so much wisdom packed in that remark.

So this is what I ended up saying:

“Man, that’s a tough one. While I would like your friend to be as mellow as possible, I don’t feel comfortable connecting anyone so mentally unstable to my dealers. Please tell him so. And that I suggest he goes to Harlem or East New York and score off some “thugs” and then listen to Hannity denounce thugs on air, and maybe, you know, think.”

I’m not saying I’m better than anyone else. The repressed returns, that joke’s on all of us. But after thousands of years of “the beatings will continue until morale improves,” shouldn’t we should try something else?
